Scitech Grand Final
On Friday 24th April, KS1, LKS2 and UKS2 winners from the EQT schools for the Scitech competition took part in the Grand Final at Heymann Primary School. The event was hosted by Miss Bussey and it was wonderful to see a record-breaking amount of schools participating, and enthused about science. It was also particularly impressive to see so many children able to propel the buggies entirely independently and able to resolve any problems that arose on the day themselves.
The challenge this year was to create an egg brake buggy: a self-propelling buggy that was capable of safely carrying an egg and stopping (without breaking the egg) as close to the ‘wall’ as possible. For KS1, the wall was 2m from the start line; for LKS2, the wall was 4m from the start line; for UKS2, the wall was 5m from the start line. The focus was on controlled motion, to ensure that the buggy didn’t crash into the wall!
After a spectacular event, supported by Heymann science ambassadors and our panel of judges (Hazel Ebling, Jeanette Hull and Nick Milne), the winners were revealed as follows:
KS1 – Winning buggy (Round Hill)
LKS2 – Winning buggy (Abbey Road)
UKS2 – Winning buggy (Richard Bonington)
Most ingenious winners were as follows: Burton Joyce (KS1), Burton Joyce (LKS2) and Cropwell Bishop (UKS2).
Most aesthetic winners were as follows: Richard Bonington (KS1), Willow Farm (LKS2) and Heymann (UKS2).
All of the children that reached this stage of the competition deserve high praise and the judges found it extremely difficult to select the winners for most ingenious and most aesthetic as the standard was extraordinarily high. Thank you so much to all that attended. It really was a delight to see so many children, staff and parents invested in this great event.
Miss Clair Bussey
